Canadian parents of transgender child ‘lose confidence in their child’s ability to be loved’

Canada’s social media giants are taking the lead in tackling discrimination against trans people, a leading expert has warned.

Read more Social media giants including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have taken a lead role in raising awareness about trans issues in Canada.

The latest initiative, called Trans Kids, involves offering parents access to a community of trans and gender non-conforming kids on Facebook and Instagram.

The project launched last month and has seen more than 20,000 children from across Canada participate.

In the first three months, more than 15,000 people signed up to receive the free account.

Trans Kids, which launched last week, also offers parents access “to support groups for kids in their communities, and the opportunity to share photos of their kids in a fun way”.

“The main thing that’s important for trans kids is to feel safe,” said the initiative’s co-founder and executive director, Jenna Gilder, a transgender man who has been raising children in his family’s suburban Toronto neighbourhood for more than two decades.

“There’s a lot of misinformation around transgender people in our society, which is not something we want our kids to be exposed to.”

Gilder said it was important for parents to be able to connect with other trans kids.

“If you want to know what your kids are like, that’s really helpful,” she said.

“They might be transgender, but they’re really happy with who they are.

There’s a good chance that if they see a trans kid in a social media group, they might not feel comfortable.”

She added: “If you see a transgender kid in an adult group, it’s a very good way for them to know that there are trans people around, so it can be a learning environment for them.”

We want to help kids who might not have a lot to go on with their own identity.

“Gilders’ research showed that trans kids are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and suicide than their cisgender peers.

Goulders said the lack of trans-friendly spaces on Facebook, Instagram and other platforms was partly due to the fact that there is still a stigma around transgender identity in Canada and other countries.”

It’s still very, very taboo to be trans in this country, and that’s not helping the situation,” she explained.”

When you have to be honest about it, the whole trans community is in trouble.

“There’s no such thing as a trans-positive person, but it’s important to know who they might be.”

The reality is that there’s a great deal of misinformation about trans people in the world.

It is still an incredibly challenging time to be transgender in Canada, especially in a country like Canada,” she continued.”

That’s something we have to address in our community, to talk about it more openly.

“She said it would be important for social media platforms to make their sites more inclusive of trans kids by creating communities of trans people and adding “gender-neutral” options to the search bar for parents and users.

A Facebook spokesperson told the Guardian that it had “been working hard” to help make its platform more inclusive.”

Our team is committed to ensuring that our users are able to find and find their content in the most accurate way, and we regularly update our policies to better protect trans people from discrimination and harassment,” they said.”

For more than a decade, we have seen an increase in visibility for trans people across our platform, and are committed to making sure that we keep up with the times.
