For example, a lot of people hear a language differently depending on how close their speech is to someone who has Down syndrome, a disorder in which people have no vocal cords.
So it’s not a surprise that hearing a language with different consonants and vowels can affect how we understand others.
That’s why many researchers, including neuroscientists at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University at Buffalo, are trying to understand how language affects our brains.
Researchers from Berkeley and UC Berkeley have used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine how language and hearing affect brain activity in people with Down syndrome.
The study is published in the June issue of the journal PLOS ONE.
The researchers recruited 30 people with developmental disabilities who spoke different languages in different ways.
They used fMRI to measure activity in brain regions associated with language perception and language processing.
For instance, they also scanned the brains of 15 people with a hearing impairment who spoke a language spoken by someone with Down Syndrome.
They found that people with hearing impairment had a much stronger activation in the right temporal cortex, the part of the brain associated with processing sounds.
These people also showed a weaker activation in a part of their brain called the inferior parietal lobule, a part that’s associated with social cognition.
They also showed stronger activation of the left inferior frontal gyrus.
The results suggest that language and sound are involved in how the brains work together, according to the researchers.
“These findings are consistent with what is already known about the interaction of language and perception,” the researchers write in their paper.
“Language and perception are often linked, but the connection may be weaker in some people,” says Jennifer Pugh, a professor of neuroscience at UC Berkeley.
“Our study adds to the growing body of research that suggests that language affects the way we process sound.”
Pugh has conducted fMRI studies in people who speak different languages.
In one, she found that language comprehension and perception in people speaking different languages was similar.
“We’ve shown for the first time that language can affect the way the brain processes sound,” Pugh says.
“People with Down’s syndrome can hear sounds that are much louder than someone without the disorder, but when they hear sounds in a language that sounds like a normal conversation, they can make a better guess as to what the person is trying to communicate.”
In the next steps, we’ll try to understand what this means for hearing in people without Down’s Syndrome,” Paugh says.
In addition to the studies from Berkeley, Pugh and her colleagues have also done studies on people who have Down syndrome themselves, using fMRI.
Pugh’s research group has found that hearing and language can have different effects on the brain.
The people with autism spectrum disorder have been shown to have an even stronger correlation between the number of people with language disabilities and the volume of their brains.
I’m optimistic that the study will help us better understand the connections between the brain and speech,” she says.
